Graduation
All you need to do in order to graduate.
Graduation Procedure
After completing all the requirements of the programme (including submission of the MA thesis) the last task that remains is the graduation paperwork. Follow the procedure as indicated.
Step 1
Students should make an appointment with the study coordinator to verify whether all requirements for graduation have been fulfilled. This should take place at least 4 weeks before the graduation date.
Step 2
When all the requirements for the graduation are fulfilled, the student administration will issue a grade list, which requires a signature from the Secretary of the MA Examinations Committee. At this point students should make an appointment with the Secretary of the Examinations Committee to obtain the signature. The secretary will also issue a letter (‘Afstudeerverklaring’) which confirms that all requirements for the completion of the degree were met.
IMPORTANT NOTE
Students whose thesis grade is submitted to the student administration by August 8 and who make the necessary appointments with the student administration and the secretary of the MA examinations committee before August 15, will receive their diplomas at the graduation ceremony in September. If the thesis grade is submitted later (but no later than August 15), students should make those appointments a week after the grade has been submitted, and no later than 31 August. They will then receive their diploma in December.
Rules concerning Cum Laude Graduation
The Examinations Committee determined today (May 9, 2011) to allow students with JPLT1 certificates to be given vrijstelling from AAJ classes. However, given the complementary nature of AAJ education, we also want to encourage students to take AAJ, even if they do have JPLT 1. To encourage this we have determined the following rule: To be considered for cum laude, students must have attained passing or above grades (not VR) in both AAJ units. In other words, even if they have JPLT1, a student can not get cum laude unless they have also actually completed (rather than been excused from ) the AAJ units. Of course, in order to actually be awarded cum laude, the student must also meet all the usual Faculty wide criteria (average of 8.5 and thesis grade 8.5 or above). PLEASE NOTE THAT THE NEW RULE WILL APPLY FOR THE NEW COHORTS OF STUDENTS, STARTING WITH THE 2011/13 COHORT!
Graduation Procedure for Students Abroad
Students who know in advance that they will not be able to be present in the Netherlands at the time their thesis grade becomes available and will not be able to follow the graduation procedure in person, may request that someone represent them. To do so, they must submit an Authorization Letter to the Secretary of the Examinations Committee stating the name of the person who will represent them. When the representative comes to collect the diploma and supplement from the Secretary of the Examinations Committee, they must present identification (such as passport or drivers license).
Graduation Ceremony
The next graduation ceremony will take place on 23 September 2011 at 4 p.m. in room ACAD/FACSocWet (Academigebouw Bldg., first floor). The ceremony will be followed by drinks. Please, inform Dr. Black how many people will participate in your graduation, so that we can make appropriate arrangements.
