Photographs are multifaceted, being at the same time carriers of cultural heritage, part of our cultural heritage as well as art objects. Analogue photographs are also known for their chemical instability and the more so when in contact with other materials, as for example in contemporary art works. This degradation process is not reversible, it cannot be stopped and it has great consequences for the photographs’ appearance. To deal with a the conservation and preservation of these complex objects a multidisciplinary approach is therefore needed. The research project will integrate art historical and museum studies with conservation and conservation science. For the first time this combined approach will be employed at this extent for photographic material. As a result new insights needed for the conservation and preservation of photographic artworks will be generated.

Samenwerking met Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam
The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (SMA) is the initiator and co‐applicant of the project. It will participate actively by making its collection available, as well as its staff, including art historians and conservators. The SMA will also facilitate researchers by giving access to the works and by supplying facilities and non‐academic personnel to install the works. The other participating museums, including Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen Rotterdam and the Museum De Pont Tilburg will also participate by making available artworks from their high quality collections.
