Drs. Bart Karstens (1975) studeerde Kunstmatige Intelligentie met specialisatie in Computationele Taalkunde en Logica aan de Faculteit Wijsbegeerte in Utrecht. Daarnaast studeerde hij Geschiedenis in Utrecht en specialiseerde zich in de Vergelijkende Wetenschapsgeschiedenis dat hij studeerde in Utrecht, Amsterdam en Berlijn. Hij werkte een jaar op het Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica in Amsterdam (2002-2003) en was ook verbonden aan het Instituut voor Geschiedenis in Utrecht als docent (2007). Sinds september 2008 werkt hij in Leiden als promovendus bij het onderzoeksproject “Philosophical Foundations of the Historiography of Science”.
Huidig onderzoek:
Binnen het NWO programma richt ik mij op het project ‘Assessments of Past Science’. Het onderzoek valt wellicht samen te vatten in één vraag: hoeveel kennis van het wetenschappelijke proces hebben we nodig om de uitkomsten ervan te kunnen beoordelen? Vragen die daaruit volgen zijn: welke beoordelingen zijn gewenst en welke beoordelingen worden haalbaar geacht in de wetenschapsgeschiedenis en/of de wetenschapsfilosofie? De ambitie is om de antwoorden op deze vragen te transformeren tot een methodologie voor wetenschapshistorisch onderzoek. Er moet een manier gevonden worden om de afstand tussen enerzijds de sociaal en cultureel georiënteerde studies van wetenschap en anderzijds de historiografie die zich vooral op de wetenschappelijke inhoud richt te overbruggen. Wat mij aanspreekt in het hele project is de combinatie tussen de diverse disciplines: wetenschapsfilosofie, wetenschapsgeschiedenis en mogelijk ook wetenschapssociologie. Ik ben er namelijk van overtuigd dat het bestuderen van het fenomeen wetenschap het meest vruchtbaar is wanneer een interdisciplinaire aanpak wordt gehanteerd.
