Onderwijs
Mijn onderwijs concentreert zich op invloedrijke aspecten van de filosofie van Oudheid en Middeleeuwen. Ik ben geïnteresseerd in de receptie van Plato, Aristoteles en de Stoa in de late Oudheid (200-600 AD), met name in het Neoplatonisme. Filosofen uit de late Oudheid discussiëren over kritische vragen en problemen op een wijze die de verwerking van de antieke filosofie in Middeleeuwen, Renaissance en de Vroegmoderne tijd verregaand heeft beïnvloed. Soms domineren ze zelfs nog onze moderne interpretatie van Plato en Aristoteles.
Onderzoek
Mijn onderzoek richt zich op (de receptie van) Aristoteles’ wetenschapsfilosofie en wijsgerige psychologie in Oudheid en Middeleeuwen. Ik ben speciaal geïnteresseerd in de interpretatie van Aristoteles’ Analytica posteriora, Over de ziel, en Over waarneming en haar objecten vanaf de late Oudheid. Op dit terrein bestaat een interessante wisselwerking tussen filosofie en exacte wetenschappen zoals wiskunde en astronomie in de Oudheid. Mijn belangrijkste bronnen zijn de filosofische commentaren van Alexander van Aphrodisias, Themistius, Philoponus, Simplicius, Eustratius en Grosseteste, alsmede het werk van Plotinus en Proclus. Ik bestudeer ook filosofische commentaren uit de Renaissance die direct zijn beïnvloed door de laat-antieke commentaren die in de 15e eeuw in nieuwe edities beschikbaar kwamen.
Internationale samenwerking
- Leiden, Utrecht en Leuven werken samen in het Centrum voor Antieke Wijsbegeerte (CAW) dat een deel van de opleiding van MA en PhD
studenten verzorgt, en regelmatig bijeenkomsten en lezingen door buitenlandse gastsprekers organiseert. - Team leader in het Europese programma From natural philosophy to science (2002-2007) dat wordt gefinancierd door de European Science Foundation.
- Editor van de Engelse vertaling met commentaar van de Griekse commentaren op de Analytica Posteriora, onderdeel van het project Ancient Commentators on Aristotle
- Lid en voormalig voorzitter van de Academia Platonica septima Monasteriensis, een Europees netwerk voor onderzoek naar het Platonisme, gevestigd in Münster (Duitsland).
Curriculum vitae
Prof.dr. Frans A.J. de Haas (1963) studeerde Klassieke Talen in Leiden, waar hij ook het doctoraat behaalde in de Antieke Wijsbegeerte (1995). Hij werkte een jaar als gastonderzoeker aan het Institute of Classical Studies (London) op een beurs van de Niels Stensen Stichting. Verder was hij Akademie-onderzoeker aan de Universiteit Utrecht (1997-2000), en universitair docent Antieke en Middeleeuwse Wijsbegeerte aan de Universiteit Nijmegen (2000-2002). Sinds 2003 is hij hoogleraar in de Antieke en Middeleeuwse Wijsbegeerte aan de Universiteit Leiden. In de jaren 2004-2005 was hij Decaan van de Faculteit der Wijsbegeerte.
