Cursussen (Keltisch) Iers, 2010-12

Het Iers is één van de vier nog levende Keltische talen, en behoort aldus tot de meest westelijke tak van de Indo-Europese taalfamilie. Niet langer de eerste voertaal in Ierland, wordt het nog gesproken door een klein aantal mensen in voornamelijk westelijke gebieden, en algemeen op Ierse scholen onderwezen. Deze taal, die veel interessante taalkundige eigenaardigheden vertoont en buitengewoon idiomatisch is, heeft ook een fascinerende en veelzijdige literaire geschiedenis, die teruggaat tot de zesde eeuw na Christus.
Een tweejarige cyclus van vier cursussen Hedendaags Iers en Oudiers wordt aangeboden door dr. Wim Tigges (voormalig Universitair Docent bij de Opleiding Engels). In deze cursussen ligt de nadruk meer op (voornamelijk passieve) taalverwerving en op literaire aspecten dan op taal- of cultuurgeschiedenis. Ze kunnen afzonderlijk of in combinatie worden gevolgd door elke belangstellende, bijvoorbeeld voor extra studiepunten op BA of MA niveau, of bij wijze van à la carte of contractonderwijs. 
Alle cursussen worden gedoceerd als werkcolleges in de Engelse taal, op donderdagochtenden van 10.15 - 13.00 uur, op een nader vast te stellen locatie. Het minimum aantal starters in semester 1 en 3 is vijf, het maximum is 16 deelnemers. Irish for Beginners 1

Irish for Beginners 1: Simple Conversations (1st semester 2010-2011). This course will introduce students to the pronunciation and in particular to the basics of grammar and vocabulary of Modern (Gaelic) Irish (Munster dialect of the Dingle Peninsula, Co. Kerry), by means of active participation in class. The course may be attended and rounded off independently, but is really meant as a preparation for Irish for Beginners 2: Passive Irish (see Semester 2). 
The course is 5 ECTS and will take place on Thursdays 10.15 - 13.00.

Irish for Beginners 2

Irish for Beginners 2: Passive Irish (2nd semester 2010-2011). This course is a continuation of Irish for Beginners 1 (an entrance examination can be taken by students who have acquired a basic knowledge of Modern Irish elsewhere). Participants will study the more complex aspects of Modern Irish syntax. In addition, an Irish children's book will be read in class. Completion of this course will enable students to read a simple text in Irish.
The course is 5 ECTS and will take place on Thursdays 10.15 - 13.00.

An Introduction to Old Irish

An Introduction to Old Irish (1st semester 2011-2012). Old Irish was the language spoken and written in Ireland in the period 600-900 AD. It is a rather coplex but extremely fascinating ancient form of an Indo-European language, in which, besides historical and legal texts and sotries about heroes and mythical personages, a multitude of both religious and secular lyrics has been transmitted. In this course the student will make the acquaintance of the basic phonology and syntax of Old Irish, which will be illustrated by means of lyrical texts. The course may be attended and rounded off independently, but is also meant as a preparation for Old Irish Prose (see Semester 4).
The course is 5 ECTS and will take place on Thursdays 10.15 - 13.00.

Old Irish Prose

Old Irish Prose (2nd semester 2011-2012). In this course the student will translate and study Tochmarc Étaíne ("The Wooing of Étaín"), a fascinating medieval saga, as well as select passages from the Táin Bó Cuailgne ("The Cattle Raid of Cooley"), one of the oldest epic stories in European literature.
The course is 5 ECTS (can be extended to 10 ECTS) and will take place on Thursdays 10.15 - 13.00.
